Cafecito

A forty minute one-act commenting on art and creativity in a product-oriented capitalist society, Cafecito offered a unique blend of realism and magical realism in its staging. As such, I wanted to underscore and transition scenes with a unifying sound, one that contained the same amount of whimsy and play as the show itself. Simon Jeffes' Penguin Cafe Orchestra suited the needs of the show perfectly. Their largely acoustic instrumentation coupled with their quirky and charming melodies helped transform the black box into an immersive cafe. This play also called for multiple devised movement pieces, most notably one about distracting digital media like TikTok—this was perhaps my favorite piece to compose. Plus, I had fun with a short coffee machine sound too! Audiences loved Cafecito, and I am proud to have played a part in that response.

Without Words

Without Words was a movement based retelling of the ancient Sanskrit myth of Rama and Sita. The project began with a masterclass on Rasaboxes, a form of emotional embodiment based on an ancient Indian performance theory text, the Natyashastra, and culminated in a twenty minute piece devised over the course of a week. My role as sound designer proved pivotal towards rehearsals, as the scenes relied heavily on the music we selected and how each song was cut, looped, and spliced together. I attended every rehearsal and was editing sound files on the fly to accommodate the changes to songs requested by the performers. I felt very involved in the devising process, as I pitched suggestions for the songs themselves as well as ways to make the music work for what movements the performers prepared. The performance itself was bookended by a prologue and an epilogue that each featured timed narration, so I had to segment and play each set of lines at the correct times in the QLab software to time the narration to the movement. It was very fun to be in such a face paced production and brought my collaboration and audio editing skills to the foreground.

In addition to my role as a scenic carpenter, I also served as the assistant scenic designer on As You Like It. One of my chief responsibilities was researching and experimenting with environmentally sustainable stone textures for the large stone bridge on which much of the play's action occurred. As it turns out, recycled paper insulation makes a great additive for stone treatment! Coupled with Tim Mann's paint treatment, the bridge truly rocked to life.
